US Government, Google Join Zuckerberg-Backed Biohub in $1.8 Billion Push for AI Biology Data
The project will pool funding, data and computing to help scientists test experiments virtually and narrow the most promising lab work.
- On Wednesday, Biohub announced a $1.8 billion collaboration with the U.S. government, Google parent Alphabet, and Meta Platforms to build open AI datasets for biological research.
- Biohub Head of Science Alex Rives said researchers face a 'big challenge' bridging the gap between digital compute and the physical world of biology; the initiative aims to capture the 'language of the cell' to accelerate drug development.
- Funding includes $500 million from the Department of Energy over five years, $300 million from Meta and Google DeepMind, and $500 million in federal investment coordinated by the National Institutes of Health, with Biohub previously committing $500 million.
- Commercial partners receive one year of exclusive access to developed data before it becomes a public scientific resource; Rives stated this embargo incentivizes private companies to contribute while ensuring information eventually benefits the broader research community.
- Partners expect an initial dataset within one year, targeting a five-year window for work that would otherwise take decades; predictive models could eventually help scientists investigate aging, regeneration, and molecular mechanisms behind diseases like Alzheimer's.
