Discontent is growing in Romania. Thousands of Romanian teachers have taken to the streets of Bucharest to protest tax increases, pay cuts and school mergers. The government says it is a case of budget constraints, while unions say it is a betrayal.
An austerity package came into effect in Romania in August, which led to, among other things, increases in VAT and excise duties to reduce the budget deficit.
