The 27 EU Member States are considering a new multi-annual budget proposal for the period 2028-2034, which maintains the reductions proposed by the European Commission for agricultural and cohesion policies, but at the same time reduces allocations for the new competitiveness fund, the security and defence fund and the external action fund, reports on Thursday to the AFP and EFE agencies, taken by Agerpres.
Cyprus, as the rotating EU president, has presented a budget proposal. According to critics, including the Netherlands, too little has come of the intention for a smaller budget. A promised modernization of the budget is also faltering.
The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU has presented a draft starting point for negotiations on the Union's future long-term budget (MFF), according to which it would be approximately 37 billion euros smaller than the one proposed by the European Commission last July.
On Thursday, the Member States of the European Union received the first proposal with figures for the Community budget of 2028-2034, a document which essentially maintains the initial approach of the European Commission and confirms the lesser weight of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and cohesion funds in the face of new priorities such as competitiveness, security or defence.
Governments are preparing to open negotiations for the financial year 2028-2034.
