Endangered Species Among Finalists for Photography Award
Finalists include images of fewer than 250 red handfish and emperor penguins newly listed as endangered, highlighting conservation concerns.
The Australian Beaker Street Festival unveiled 2026 finalists for its Beaker Street Science Photography Prize, marking the festival's 10th anniversary with images submitted by photographers and scientists worldwide.
Festival founder Dr. Margo Adler said the prize showcases photography's power to make science accessible and emotional, revealing stories otherwise unseen by the public.
Finalists highlight endangered Emperor penguins and Red handfish, with fewer than 250 of the latter left in the wild, alongside the Miena cider gum, numbering under 300.
Members of the public are invited to vote online for favorite finalist images, with winners of the Judges' Choice and People's Choice awards announced during the festival.
The competition celebrates photography revealing the wonder and fragility of the natural world, acting as a living archive where growth, decay, and renewal form a continuous cycle.
