Thai Ex-PM Thaksin Appears on Stand in Royal Defamation Case
BANGKOK, THAILAND, JUL 16 – Court hearings examine whether legal procedures justified former PM Thaksin Shinawatra's extended hospital stay amid corruption and lese-majeste charges, with testimony from doctors and officials.
Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is testifying in a royal defamation case in Bangkok, facing up to 15 years in prison if convicted of breaching lese majeste laws protecting the royal family.
The charges relate to remarks Thaksin made to South Korean media ten years ago regarding Thailand's royal family.
Thaksin is scheduled to provide at least three days of testimony in this closed-door trial.
Thaksin stated his loyalty to the monarchy and thanked the king for his pardon, as noted by his lawyer.
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been a central figure in Thai politics for more than 20 years, testified in court on Wednesday 16 July during his trial for lesis majesty, his lawyer said. The verdict was set for 22 August.
