'The Political Cost of Your Absence Is Rising' | No Quorum in Texas House on Friday
TRAVIS COUNTY, TEXAS, AUG 9 – Texas Speaker Dustin Burrows issued civil warrants and enlisted FBI help to compel absent Democrats blocking redistricting, with 13 lawmakers named in a removal lawsuit, officials said.
- Earlier this week, over 50 House Democrats fled the state to block a redistricting vote, denying quorum.
- Under Burrows's order, absent members must claim paychecks on Capitol grounds, as he said `While the Constitution forbids us from withholding pay, it does not dictate how we issue the pay`.
- Speaker Burrows said there being 95 members present, a quorum is not present, and AG Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against 13 Democrats.
- Ahead of Monday, Burrows said `these efforts will continue through the weekend` and `for those that have fled to Illinois or California, the FBI's assistance has reportedly been enlisted`.
