Texas House approves antisemitism bill in response to pro-Palestinian protests
On April 29, 2025, the Texas House passed a preliminary vote on a bill that establishes a definition of antisemitism for use in public school disciplinary policies.
The legislation follows pro-Palestine protests at Texas universities in 2024, which some leaders labeled antisemitic, prompting government response.
The bill, led by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, requires schools to consider antisemitism in disciplinary cases using the IHRA definition but does not create new violations.
The bill passed the House 134-2 and Senate earlier, with Rep. Jon Rosenthal, the only Jewish member, pushing an amendment protecting First Amendment speech.
Opponents warn the bill may chill free speech and disproportionately target the Jewish community, while supporters expect it to provide clearer protections against antisemitism.
