Texas Hill Country floods test new warning systems after last year’s deadly disaster
New sirens, wireless alerts and private flood towers were used as officials said lessons from 2025 improved the response to this week’s storms.
- On Friday, new storms triggered flash floods across Texas Hill Country, testing emergency warning systems installed after the 2025 disaster that killed 136 people.
- Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said lessons from 2025 led to better preparation, while state Sen. Paul Bettencourt noted new sirens in Ingram, Kerr, and Kendall counties helped warn residents.
- The National Weather Service issued 38 alerts between Tuesday and Thursday, while River Sentry founder Ian Cunningham reported 104 sirens installed along the Guadalupe River.
- Residents had mixed experiences; Suzanne Sutphin Gschwind of Kerrville praised warnings, saying "this year, very different," while Kat Sprawls of Batesville reported receiving no alerts until floodwaters arrived.
- Twenty-Eight additional counties are eligible for flood warning funding, with most developing implementation plans for review by the Texas Water Development Board.
