KERR COUNTY, TEXAS, JUL 6 – Record rainfall caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in 45 minutes, killing 24 people and leaving over 20 girls missing from Camp Mystic, officials said.
- Since July 3, heavy rain dumped between 12 and 20 inches in Kerr County, Texas, causing the Guadalupe River to flood Camp Mystic girls camp and sweep away a cabin carrying up to 23 girls, resulting in 13 fatalities.
- Meteorologists noted the intense storm stalled over the Guadalupe River for 10 hours, flooding 'flash flood alley' and causing the river to rise about 8 metres in 45 minutes, echoing Hurricane Harvey.
- Rescue teams used 14 helicopters, 12 drones, and hundreds of personnel, with Federal and US Coast Guard assistance, to rescue 237 people, including 167 by helicopter.
- In Kerr County, authorities cancelled Fourth of July celebrations, including Austin’s fireworks show, and informed families of Camp La Junta boys camp that campers were safe but could not evacuate until about 7pm Friday.
- Looking ahead, officials cautioned that small streams could continue flooding, and the death toll is expected to rise as the full scope is understood over the weekend.
