Tesla to Wind Down Cybertruck Production at Texas Factory, Musk Says
Weak Cybertruck sales are pushing Tesla to shift factory space toward its autonomous robotaxi program, Musk said.
- On Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced plans to wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to accommodate increased manufacturing of the Cybercab.
- The Cybertruck, touted by Musk as a futuristic rival to pickup trucks from Ford, has struggled to sustain mass-market interest since its 2023 launch.
- Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill said, "Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab," while Tesla has not specified if production will move to another facility or discontinue entirely.
- Tesla intends to make the Cybercab the primary driverless model within its larger robotaxi network, aligning with Musk's goal to transform the automaker into a robotics and self-driving company.
- The automaker's Austin plant remains the only known facility equipped to manufacture the specialized components required for the new model, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
