Ex-Cleveland Guardians Catcher Bo Naylor Testifies He Didn’t Know Gamblers Bet on Individual Pitches
Bo Naylor said he learned of pitch-by-pitch betting only after the criminal case, as prosecutors say players pocketed at least $460,000.
- Catcher Bo Naylor testified Thursday at a New York sports betting trial that he was unaware gamblers could place bets on individual pitches until the criminal case against his former teammates Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz arose.
- Prosecutors allege Clase and Ortiz accepted several thousand dollars in payments to provide information about pitches to gamblers, enabling the bettors to pocket at least $460,000. Clase, who completed the fourth season of a $20 million, five-year contract, allegedly recruited Ortiz into the scheme in 2025.
- Naylor described how catchers and pitchers develop pregame strategies for each opponent, noting that All-Star Clase had "pretty good command" of his pitches. However, he acknowledged that pitchers cannot ensure every throw reaches its intended target.
- Both Clase and Ortiz pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges and remain free on bail with nondisciplinary leave from the Cleveland Guardians. Defense attorney Michael Ferrara questioned Naylor about Clase's interest in cockfighting, legal in the Dominican Republic, rather than gambling.
- Betting on individual pitches represents a form of prop betting that has expanded alongside legal sports wagering. Legal sports betting has spread to 39 states since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for it in 2018.
