Tesla Bars Customers From Selling Model S, X 'Signature' Edition Within One Year - Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)
Tesla is offering a limited run with free Supercharging and Full Self-Driving, while buyers agree not to resell the vehicles for one year.
- Tesla is inviting fans to purchase a 'Signature' variant of the soon-to-be-discontinued Model S and X, but buyers must agree they "will not sell or otherwise attempt to sell the Vehicle within the first year" following delivery.
- Elon Musk said the luxury vehicles will receive an "honorable discharge" as part of Tesla's shift to an "autonomous future," retiring the Model to free up factory space for Optimus production. Musk told investors in January the two models would be retired.
- Starting at $159,420—a nod to Musk's favorite number—the limited-edition run includes around 250 Model S units, featuring exclusive "garnet red" paint, gold carbon-ceramic brakes, and free Full Self-Driving. Model X production numbers remain unspecified.
- Should "unforeseen" circumstances force a sale, buyers must notify Tesla, which maintains the right to repurchase the Vehicle at the original price listed on the Final Price Sheet less $0.25/mile driven. This contractual clause effectively locks buyers in.
- Tesla plans to focus on mass production of the Cybercab and Optimus this year as part of its pivot toward autonomous technology. Musk has also said the company aims to unveil a new Roadster later this month.
