Police Dismantle KillSec Ransomware Gang Allegedly Led by 16-Year-Old

  • On Thursday, Spanish police arrested a 16-year-old Romanian national in Alicante suspected of operating the hacker group KillSec as part of a Europe-wide probe into around 1,000 ransomware attacks over two years.
  • Authorities launched the Europe-wide investigation after detecting a ransomware campaign in which KillSec allegedly obtained "substantial ransom payments" through systematic attacks on organizations.
  • Police raided eight houses across Spain, Greece, Romania, and Britain, seizing evidence and assets. Officers arrested two additional suspects in their twenties, one each in Britain and Romania.
  • Europol stated KillSec "exploited software vulnerabilities and poorly secured access points, particularly to cloud storage," to copy sensitive information. Puerto Rico filed an extradition request for the suspect arrested in Britain.
  • A fourth person, a developer identified as part of KillSec, remains unarrested; the individual was a minor when some offenses occurred, complicating prosecution efforts.
