Teen high on laughing gas jailed after using car as a weapon to kill mum-of-three
The jury found he used his car as a weapon and also seriously injured Shelley Davies’ partner, David Bratcher.
On Friday, Mrs Justice Stacey sentenced Kian Bateman to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years for the murder of 38-year-old Shelley Davies in Cardiff.
Last September, Bateman drove his car at a group outside the 4th Glamorgan Home Guard Club while high on nitrous oxide, running over Davies and seriously injuring her partner, David Bratcher.
Justice Stacey found Bateman did not intend to harm Davies but was guilty of murder because she lay in the path of his deliberate attack on Bratcher.
In a statement read to the court, Bratcher called Davies "the person I loved, my best friend," while family members described the Reiki healer as a "force of nature."
Beyond the prison sentence, Bateman was disqualified from driving for 21 years and 109 days and must pass an extended re-test before legally operating a vehicle.
