Teen to be sentenced over stabbing of Qld grandmother Vyleen White
The teen, on bail for prior robberies, fatally stabbed Queensland grandmother Vyleen White during an attempted car theft while with a group drinking vodka, prosecutors said.
- On Thursday, Chief Justice Helen Bowskill sentenced the now 17-year-old to 16 years in Brisbane and found special circumstances, including his youth and early guilty plea.
- Shortly before 6pm the teenager left a group of teens who had been drinking vodka at a vacant property, changed clothes, wore a surgical mask, and was on bail for robberies, prosecutors said.
- The court heard the attacker inflicted a 17cm-deep wound and stole the 2009 Hyundai Getz, while Justice Helen Bowskill said it caused "immense, indeed catastrophic pain and suffering to her family."
- The case prompted changes to Queensland law that are not retroactive, and the offender has served one year and nine months, making release likely in late 2033.
- Victor White read a victim impact statement describing shock, disbelief and anger as the family wept; Crown Prosecutor Chris Cook sought 17 to 18 years citing aggravating features while defence barrister Matthew Hynes argued for release before 25.
