Teen Stomped to Death in Mississippi Jail, Coroner Says
A detention officer was placed on leave as investigators review video showing the 18-year-old being kicked and stomped, officials said.
Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard confirmed Thursday that 18-year-old Mielun Butler was stomped to death inside the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond last week, with shoe prints visible on his head.
Butler had been held on a $1 million bond following his July 2 arrest for the murder of Melvin Edwards at the Pine Ridge Garden Apartments, charged as the second suspect in the case.
Sheriff Tyree Jones confirmed Monday that a viral social media video showing Butler beaten and lying face down on concrete is authentic; an officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
Jones stated the Mississippi Bureau is conducting a criminal investigation while his office handles administrative review; he declined to name the officer or confirm if they provided the recording device.
Federal judge Carlton Reeves will hold a hearing Friday to discuss jail conditions, while a Hinds County Chancery Court judge ordered the sheriff's office to release death records withheld for over a year.
