Terror Plot Teen’s Dutton Search: Court
Prosecutors say the teen researched explosives, bought bomb-making items and discussed attacks in messages and diary entries.
A Brisbane teen pleaded not guilty on Monday to preparing a terrorist attack in Brisbane Supreme Court, with prosecutors alleging he planned to use explosives against Liberal Party members and a public event.
The Crown alleges the teenager targeted the Liberal Party because he opposed Peter Dutton's plan to build seven nuclear plants, influenced by American domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber.
Police investigations revealed the defendant searched for "Where is Peter Dutton located" and purchased chemicals; a friend contacted authorities in July 2024 after receiving concerning messages about the alleged plot.
Defence barrister Laura Reece KC told jurors on Tuesday the central issue is the teenager's actual intentions, with the trial expected to last 10 days.
Journals documented the teen's struggles with autism and mental health, which the defence contends are relevant to assessing his state of mind; adult defendants convicted of such charges face mandatory life sentences.
