Teen Rushed to Hospital After Being Bitten by Shark on Offshore Boat Near Galveston Beach
Coast Guard crews applied tourniquets and transported the boy to a Galveston hospital after the shark bite caused severe bleeding, officials said.
On Monday, a 17-year-old boy was hospitalized after suffering serious shark bite injuries while aboard a disabled fishing boat offshore near Galveston, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The fishing boat had lost power while returning to the Galveston Yacht Basin after spending several hours offshore, with the group aboard including the teen's father and one other person.
After the bite, the teen's father applied a tourniquet to control bleeding; Coast Guard Petty Officer Perry Shirzad credited this quick thinking when crews arrived and applied a second tourniquet.
Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Austin Kirwin said lifeguards and Coast Guard responders reached the disabled vessel simultaneously, with the teen transported to UTMB Health's John Sealy Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have not disclosed how the teen was bitten, the exact offshore location of the incident, or his current medical condition, as details surrounding the emergency remain limited.
