UNION, MAINE, JUL 18 – A 17-year-old suspect was arrested two weeks after Sunshine Stewart was found strangled and beaten at a popular summer spot, police said the investigation remains active.
- Maine State Police took a 17-year-old boy into custody Wednesday night in Union as part of their investigation into the death of 48-year-old Sunshine Stewart, whose body was discovered at Crawford Pond earlier this month.
- Stewart went missing while paddleboarding near 100 Acre Island on the evening of July 2 after planning a summer at Mic Mac Campground, and police continue to seek information about the case.
- Authorities confirmed Stewart died from strangulation and blunt force trauma, and the arrest followed relentless investigative work by Maine State Police detectives.
- Stewart's sister said she worked as a contractor and was formerly a marine biologist, lobsterman, and boat captain who enjoyed outdoors activities including boating and yoga.
