Gov. Kathy Hochul Reveals Results to Statewide School Cellphone Ban
Survey respondents said 80% saw positive results from the phone-free policy, with stronger classroom behavior, engagement and social connections.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday that the state's bell-to-bell school phone ban is effectively improving learning environments, based on a statewide survey of nearly 600 teachers and school administrators.
Implemented last September, the policy prohibits smartphones and internet-enabled devices in K-12 schools to reduce distractions, making New York State the largest in the U.S. to enforce such measures.
Survey findings reveal that 80% of educators report positive school impacts; 76% observed better classroom engagement, 75% noted improved teaching ability, and 60% reported a decline in bullying incidents.
New York City Public Schools Chief of Safety Mark Rampersant observed students interacting more in cafeterias and hallways, stating, "We're seeing kids talk to each other as they transition."
While some students like Schuyler Middle School 8th-grader Ryan Duong suggest the ban is a starting point, the state's largest teachers union recently called for additional limits on screen time and artificial intelligence.
