Teacher banned over pen with hidden camera
The Teaching Regulation Agency found he acted with sexual intent and posed a risk of repeating the conduct, with no evidence of remorse.
- The Teaching Regulation Agency has indefinitely banned former science teacher Matthew Udall after a panel found he gave a student a pen containing a hidden camera and encouraged her to change clothes before using it.
- Arrested in July 2022, Udall pleaded guilty a little over two years later to inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity and attempting to observe a person doing a private act, receiving a 31 months prison sentence.
- The TRA panel concluded his actions were "sexually motivated" and "had the potential to cause serious harm to the pupil," while noting he "sought to conceal" his conduct by telling the student to "exclude their parent."
- David Oatley, acting for the Secretary of State, imposed the prohibition order with immediate effect, citing "the lack of evidence of insight and remorse, and the risk of repetition" as justification.
- Udall cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, or youth accommodation and is barred from applying for restoration of eligibility, though he may appeal to the High Court within 28 days.
