Taylor Sheridan Makes Rare Comment About Why ‘Yellowstone’ Ended, Addresses Kevin Costner’s Exit
Sheridan said Kevin Costner was only meant to appear in the first 3 seasons as Yellowstone was planned around a baton pass.
On Monday, June 29, Taylor Sheridan said on The Bill Simmons Podcast that Yellowstone was originally conceived for only three seasons, with the plan always for a transition to the next generation of the Dutton family.
Paramount Network executives pressured the production to extend the series beyond the initial three-season plan due to its massive success. "The network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it," Sheridan said.
After the show continued, Costner eventually decided to depart to pursue other projects. "Finally, Kevin hit a point where he said, 'I gotta do my own thing,'" Sheridan added.
Sheridan criticized the Paramount Network development department, describing them as "marketing executives" rather than "storytellers." He refused to take calls from them during production, citing a lack of respect.
The Yellowstone universe continues through new spinoffs like Dutton Ranch and the Kayce-focused Marshals, which feature surviving family members as the narrative expands beyond the original Montana ranch.
