Target Is Changing One of Its Biggest Customer Perks
UNITED STATES, JUL 21 – Target will limit price matching to its own stores and website as part of a strategy to improve profitability amid declining sales and inflation, analysts said.
- Target is ending its roughly decade-old price match policy on July 28, which matched lower prices from Amazon, Walmart, or its own website.
- The change comes as Target found shoppers overwhelmingly price match within Target rather than other retailers, and Walmart ended price matching in 2019.
- From now on, Target’s price match policy will only apply to items found at Target’s own physical stores or online platform within 14 days of purchase, and customers must present proof of purchase either at checkout or through customer service.
- A Target spokesperson stated that most customers use Target’s price matching policy specifically with Target products rather than with competitors, highlighting the strong consumer confidence in Target’s pricing and value.
- The policy change may shift price comparison responsibility to consumers during a period of declining sales, tariff uncertainty, and other retail challenges for Target.
