Taoiseach in Kyiv to Pledge EU Support in War Effort
Martin will discuss sanctions, energy security and EU accession support as Ireland’s presidency puts Ukraine at the center of its agenda.
On Thursday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin arrived in Kyiv to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reaffirming Ireland's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty during Ireland's presidency of the European Union.
Martin's visit underscores Ireland's "continuing solidarity" with Ukraine amid intensifying Russian attacks that have caused significant loss of life, prompting discussions on further "robust and targeted sanctions" against Moscow.
The Taoiseach will also meet Ukraine's newly appointed Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi and parliament speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, visiting civilian districts in Kyiv damaged by recent drone and missile strikes.
Officials expect Zelenskyy to reiterate concerns regarding the Russian-owned Aughinish Alumina refinery in Limerick, as the Irish Government's investigation into whether exports fuel Russian weaponry remains ongoing.
Beyond immediate aid, the leaders are focused on Ukraine's path to EU membership, with Ireland's presidency prioritizing the progression of accession chapters despite complex domestic reforms required of candidate countries.
