Talarico steps off Texas Senate campaign trail after flu diagnosis
His campaign says he will avoid in-person events until he recovers, while Paxton and Trump use his absence to press a debate attack.
Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico returned to the campaign trail Friday, ending a 12-day absence that prompted intense scrutiny from Republican opponent Attorney General Ken Paxton and President Donald Trump.
Paxton and Trump seized on Talarico's absence, launching a 'Where's Jimmy?' campaign and circulating missing-person posters. Trump amplified attacks on Truth Social, calling Talarico 'MISSING IN ACTION' and demanding he immediately report to a debate stage.
Conservative influencers circulated unverified claims that Talarico sought treatment at the Ohio-based Lindner Center of Hope, but the facility issued a statement Sunday confirming, 'Representative James Talarico has never received treatment from Lindner Center of Hope.'
Dismissing the speculation as 'a pathetic conspiracy theory,' Talarico told reporters he was recovering from the flu and challenged Paxton to debate, saying, 'I'm asking for proof of spine from him.'
Talarico faces a critical test at a CNN and Jubilee Media town hall on Wednesday, October 14, in Fort Worth, with early voting beginning October 19 in the competitive Senate race.
