Planning under way for international force in Gaza, say US advisers

The US and international partners plan a force to stabilize Gaza amid ongoing conflict, with up to 200 US troops supporting coordination roles, officials said.

  • A senior U.S. adviser said planning has begun for an international stabilisation force to enter the Gaza Strip, with the force starting to be constructed on Wednesday.
  • Since Monday, a US-brokered ceasefire has seen 20 surviving hostages returned for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, while the Gaza war caused a humanitarian catastrophe declared a famine by the United Nations.
  • Washington is consulting Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar and Azerbaijan on contributions, while the United States has agreed to provide up to 200 troops without deploying them in Gaza and has two dozen troops in coordination roles.
  • Israel's Defence Minister Katz warned of resumed fighting if Hamas breaches the deal, while delays returning remains increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid threats from Itamar Ben Gvir and Hamas's refusal to disarm complicates stabilisation.
  • With reconstruction plans under discussion, officials say rebuilding will target Hamas-free areas, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher urged opening all crossings, and advisers discussed safe zones with local partners stressing no Gazans would be forced to leave.
