China-linked hackers target Taiwan's chip industry with increasing attacks, researchers say

TAIWAN, JUL 17 – At least three China-aligned groups targeted 15 to 20 organizations using phishing and malware to advance China’s goal of semiconductor self-sufficiency amid export controls.

  • Researchers reported on July 16 that at least three China-linked hacking groups increased cyber-espionage targeting Taiwan's semiconductor industry and investment analysts.
  • The spike coincided with rising U.S. export restrictions on China regarding US-designed chips often made in Taiwan, which China aims to replace to reduce supply reliance.
  • The attacks included phishing using compromised Taiwanese university emails and impersonations of fictitious firms to deliver malware and seek collaboration across about 15 to 20 organizations.
  • Mark Kelly of Proofpoint highlighted that new types of targets have emerged, with the number of emails varying from just a few sent to specific individuals up to around 80 messages aimed at broader company-wide information gathering, while the Chinese embassy denied any involvement and reiterated China’s strong stance against all forms of cybercrime.
  • These campaigns suggest ongoing efforts aligned with Chinese state interests to achieve semiconductor self-sufficiency amid export controls, reflecting sustained focus on Taiwan's chip sector and supply chain.
