TSMC Says Global Chip Market to Hit $1.5 Trillion by 2030 as AI Drives Growth
Taiwan Semiconductor said AI and high-performance computing will drive 55% of semiconductor demand as it expands chip and packaging capacity.
- On Thursday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Deputy Co-COO Kevin Zhang announced at the company's Taiwan Technology Symposium in Hsinchu that AI is projected to drive global semiconductor output to $1.5 trillion by 2030.
- AI and high-performance computing applications are expected to account for 55 per cent of the global semiconductor market by 2030, replacing smartphones as the industry's primary growth engine after a decade of dominance.
- TSMC director of Asia-Pacific business Ray Wan noted that customers in the region used more than 2.1 million 12-inch equivalent wafers last year, stating "Smartphones are gradually becoming personal AI assistants."
- To meet rising demand, TSMC is accelerating capacity additions in 2025 and 2026, including four Arizona plants, while handsets powered by the company's 2-nanometre process technology are expected to become commercially available later this year.
- Zhang described AI as potentially "the most important and influential technology in human history," citing Taiwan's "world's strongest AI supply chain" built through partnerships with electronics manufacturers such as Quanta Computer Inc.
