Taiwan chipmaker TSMC explores Texas investment to expand production in the US

TSMC said U.S. customer demand is still outpacing supply and that spending from 2026 to 2028 will be much higher than in the past three years.

  • On Thursday, TSMC Chair and CEO C.C. Wei confirmed the chipmaker is in discussions to collaborate with Elon Musk's planned Terafab manufacturing complex in Texas, stressing any facility must be operated by TSMC.
  • Musk previously ruled out an operational role for TSMC in an October post on X, claiming his companies would own and operate the facility while TSMC could at most sublease part of the project.
  • To support U.S. technology giants including Nvidia and Apple, TSMC has pledged $265 billion for Arizona plants, including $100 billion committed in July, as artificial intelligence chip demand remains strong.
  • Wei emphasized that no agreement has been reached regarding the Texas project, noting any deal would require TSMC to manage the fab, mirroring its joint ventures in Japan and Germany.
  • Reporting record third-quarter revenue of $46.7 billion, up 41% year-on-year, TSMC continues to explore expanding capacity beyond Arizona to address persistent supply gaps amid surging artificial intelligence demand.
