SK Hynix conditions new US factory on more US chip equipment exports to China: Report
Solidigm wants approval for more U.S. equipment in Dalian as it links a planned American NAND factory to the license request.
- On Wednesday, South Korea's SK Hynix requested Washington's approval to export U.S. chipmaking equipment to China, conditioning the request on its potential construction of a new NAND facility in the U.S.
- The Commerce Department previously revoked exemptions for Hynix and Samsung, labeling them a "Biden-era loophole," and generally denies licenses for equipment intended to expand capacity at Chinese facilities.
- Solidigm, the U.S. unit of Hynix, seeks tools for the unused "Mod B" space at the Dalian site, which relies on equipment from major U.S. firms including Lam Research, Applied Materials, and KLA.
- Expanded Chinese production would help Solidigm fund a U.S. NAND plant, and the company is considering an initial public offering as early as next year to finance this facility.
- The Trump administration is pressing foreign chipmakers to build plants in the U.S. to rebuild manufacturing capacity, while NAND pricing has increased sevenfold since mid-2023, according to Walt Coon, a memory industry expert at TechInsights.
