Sydney teacher charged with alleged child grooming
Benjamin David Collinge, 29, allegedly groomed a 14-year-old online and possessed child abuse material; police found explicit images exchanged for money on his devices.
- At 5:45am on Thursday, detectives from the NSW Police Sex Crimes Squad arrested Benjamin David Collinge, a 29-year-old casual teacher at Newington College, at his Beecroft home and charged him with grooming someone under 16 and accessing child abuse material.
- The arrest stemmed from Strike Force Trawler, an ongoing NSW Police Sex Crimes Squad investigation into child exploitation on the internet, after detectives alleged Collinge posed as a 17-year-old boy to deceive a 14-year-old girl unfamiliar to him.
- Superintendent Leis alleged "the 29-year-old actively took steps online to reach out to this vulnerable 14-year-old girl," pressuring her to send sexually explicit material in exchange for money; a search of Collinge's devices unearthed child abuse material.
- Newington College immediately terminated Collinge's employment after the charges were laid, while Collinge was refused bail and will face court on Thursday; the school confirmed no current students were identified as victims.
- The headmaster stated Collinge had worked in casual roles across Newington's senior, Wyvern House, and Lindfield campuses since 2015 with a valid Working With Children Check and no prior complaints, while annual tuition reaches $48,141 for Year 12 students.
