The protection status S of Ukrainian refugees is to be restricted in order to prevent abuse. At the same time, the Federal Council also wants to promote Swiss companies during reconstruction.
In the future, a distinction will be made between "safe" and "unsafe" regions: Switzerland wants to be more rigid in the reception of Ukrainians. The country is thus taking a different path from its EU neighbours.
Swiss government proposes restrictions on Ukrainian refugees
Only those whose life and limb are at risk in Ukraine and who flee to Switzerland are to be granted S status in future. The remaining Ukrainian refugees should apply for asylum. This is what the Federal Council is proposing.
The Federal Council restricts access to S status for Ukrainians. Only those from active war zones will be eligible for S status, with stays in Ukraine limited to 15 days per semester.
In these areas, according to the Secretariat of State for Migration, there are currently no "intense fights", so the authorities want Ukrainians from these regions to receive protection status 'S' only in "exceptional" circumstances, if their particular case so warrants.
