Olympic medallist swimmer Ilya Kharun switches from Canada to United States
Kharun, a dual citizen and two-time Olympic bronze medallist, will start representing the U.S. after a one-year waiting period, leaving a gap in Canada's men's swimming team.
- On Monday, Ilya Kharun announced via Instagram that he will represent the United States going forward and thanked his Canadian teammates in the post.
- Born in Montreal but raised in Las Vegas, Kharun said he has lived in America his whole life and joined Canada’s team after registering with a Canadian passport in 2022.
- Among his highlights, Kharun is a two-time Olympic bronze medallist in the 100 and 200 butterfly at Paris 2024, holds national records, and won 200m short-course world gold in 2024.
- Swimming Canada said John Atkinson was surprised and disappointed but thanked Kharun, while World Aquatics rules require a one-year wait before he can represent the U.S., ending before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
- Kharun's absence makes Canada’s bid for men's relay medals in Los Angeles more challenging and renews calls to review support from Sport Canada, Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee.
