Swedish security service says it broke up Russian spy plot
Säpo said the Russian SVR operation used diplomatic cover to gather information and undermine Swedish decision-making, officials said.
- On Monday, the Swedish Security Service announced it thwarted a Russian intelligence operation aimed at discrediting Sweden and NATO. The counter-espionage agency said it had "gathered information on, and taken measures against" the influence effort.
- Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, directed the operation, which involved three individuals operating under diplomatic immunity. SAPO stated the plan had been orchestrated for some time before security officials intervened.
- Monitoring meetings between the individuals allowed SAPO to track assignments and conversations before dismantling the network. A spokesperson stated, "They are no longer in Sweden and we have been able to break up this operation."
- A SAPO spokesperson told Reuters the incident is "consistent with the threat we see Russia posing." The agency has identified Russia, China, and Iran as primary intelligence threats to Sweden.
