Saab Wins Contract to Integrate Sea Ceptor System on Visby-Class Corvettes

  • On 28 May 2025, Saab secured a contract worth SEK 1.6 billion to upgrade Sweden's five Visby-class corvettes by fitting them with MBDA's Sea Ceptor missile defense capability.
  • This contract follows FMV's November 2023 order for the Sea Ceptor system from MBDA as part of a long-term plan to modernise the corvettes.
  • Installing Sea Ceptor will provide the corvettes with missile-based air defence, enabling engagement of longer-range air targets over a larger area than current weapons.
  • Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s Kockums, stated that once equipped with the air defence system, the Visby-class corvettes will remain an essential asset for the foreseeable future.
  • This upgrade strengthens Sweden’s and NATO’s air and missile defence and increases the Swedish Armed Forces’ operational capability from early 2026.
