Sweden is investigating a cargo ship that allegedly transported stolen grain with a Russian crew
The cargo ship Caffa, flagged falsely in Guinea, is under criminal investigation for transporting stolen Ukrainian grain and may be unseaworthy, Swedish officials said.
- On March 7, Swedish authorities seized and opened an investigation into the Caffa after armed Swedish police boarded it off Trelleborg on March 6 in Baltic Sea waters.
- The Caffa was sailing under a Guinean flag that Sweden says is false and is on Ukraine's sanctions list, as the coast guard announced.
- Of the 11 crew members, a majority were Russian, the Russian embassy in Stockholm said 10 are Russian citizens, and one crew member is under investigation for maritime-code violations on ship safety.
- Swedish agencies will inspect the vessel after the Coast Guard took control at 3:50 p.m., and the Russian embassy in Stockholm confirmed it was informed and offered assistance.
- Rising collective action targets opaque ownership and ageing vessels averaging around 18 years as Sweden's government last year stepped up insurance checks on shadow fleet vessels used to skirt sanctions.
