NYU Student Arrested for Raising Swastika Flag During Graduation Week Event

Police say the suspect used his NYU ID to enter the facility and faces burglary, trespass and harassment charges.

  • On Tuesday, Alexander Stepnowsky, a 23-year-old Connecticut resident, was arrested for allegedly hoisting a swastika flag over a New York University building last month. He faces hate crime burglary, aggravated harassment, and criminal trespassing charges, according to the New York City Police Department.
  • During commencement on May 13, the flag appeared atop the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. It featured two Nazi symbols flanking a Star of David and the NYU torch emblem, authorities said.
  • Stepnowsky allegedly used his NYU ID to access the building roof, captured on surveillance video. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday and was released without bail.
  • NYU will pursue internal disciplinary proceedings, which could include expulsion or degree revocation, said Wiley Norvell, senior vice president for university relations and public affairs at NYU. The university cooperated fully with the NYPD throughout the investigation.
  • At NYU, heightened scrutiny regarding antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric persists in recent years. Police sources indicate Stepnowsky expressed frustration with the institution's ties to Israel's political issues.
