  • On April 20, 2024, 67-year-old Marshella Chidester drove her vehicle into the building of the Swan Boat Club located in Berlin Township during a birthday celebration for children.
  • The crash happened because Chidester was under the influence, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.18, which is over double Michigan’s legal driving limit of 0.08.
  • Chidester drove at 44 mph with full acceleration and failed to brake, causing a wall breach and injuring over a dozen people, including two children who died.
  • In March 2025, Chidester was found guilty on nine felony counts, among them two second-degree murder convictions for the deaths of siblings Alanah, 8, and Zayn Phillips, 4.
  • On May 15, 2025, Judge Daniel White sentenced Chidester to 25 to 50 years in prison, calling the case "the most tragic and heartbreaking" he has seen.
