Nurse Aboard REACH Air Medical Services Helicopter that Crashed Has Died
Suzie Smith, a nurse with 21 years at REACH Air Medical Services, died from injuries after a medical helicopter crashed for unknown reasons on Highway 50, officials said.
- On Oct. 6, an Airbus EC-130 T2 helicopter, tail number N414RX, crashed on Highway 50 east of downtown Sacramento, and Susan "Suzie" Smith, flight nurse with REACH Air Medical Services, died Friday evening from her injuries.
- With no patient on board, the helicopter crashed shortly after departing a hospital amid what officials described as an `in-air emergency`, coming to rest in the center of Highway 50.
- Bystanders and first responders pulled victims free as over a dozen motorists and about 15 people lifted part of the helicopter at 7:00 p.m., freeing at least one crew member.
- The community responded with vigils and a hospital hero's walk honoring Smith, whose 50-year nursing career included nearly 21 years with REACH Air Medical Services; her body will be flown to Red Bluff due to the Redding airport closure.
- The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash, REACH directed inquiries to the NTSB, and Pilot Chad Millward and Flight Paramedic Margaret "DeDe" Davis remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
