Suspected Ebola cases in DR Congo outbreak jump to more than 900
WHO says the outbreak has 101 confirmed cases and 220 suspected deaths, while violence and mistrust are slowing contact tracing.
- On Monday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the Ebola outbreak in central Africa is outpacing response efforts, telling an African Union meeting that health workers are "playing catch-up" as deaths reached at least 220 and suspected cases topped 900.
- The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola driving the outbreak has no approved vaccine or treatment, while DRC's Ituri and North Kivu provinces are highly insecure, complicating containment in the region long plagued by armed violence.
- Aid groups lack critical equipment including face shields, protective suits, testing kits, and body bags, while at least three attacks on health facilities in Ituri occurred, including two at the weekend that allowed more than two dozen patients to flee.
- Uganda reported seven confirmed cases by Monday, with two health workers at a Kampala hospital testing positive after exposure to a Congolese patient who died May 11; Tedros will travel to the DRC on Tuesday with WHO official Chikwe Ihekweazu.
- Tedros warned that "Countries bordering DRC are at especially high risk and should take immediate action," as international aid cuts last year have left eastern Congo vulnerable and community denial of the disease threatens containment efforts.
