An American man and his son die after suffering stings from a swarm of wasps while ziplining in Laos
The father and son were stung over 100 times by Asian giant hornets near Luang Prabang, Laos, suffering severe anaphylactic shock before dying at hospital.
- On Oct. 15, Dan Owen and his son Cooper were attacked while descending a zip line at Green Jungle Park outside Luang Prabang, Laos, and hospital officials reported they died last month.
- Doctors reported the victims endured more than 100 stings and severe anaphylactic shock, while it was not clear which type had stung them; Laos hosts the Asian giant hornet among other wasps.
- Taken first to a local clinic, both were then transported to Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital in critical condition, said emergency room physician Jorvue Yianouchongteng; the son was unconscious and died after half an hour, while the father died about three hours later.
- The U.S. State Department confirmed the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Luang Prabang and declined further comment, while the local clinic refused to comment, Green Jungle Park did not respond, and the Laos Foreign Ministry also did not reply.
