Suspect in Slaying of Colombian Presidential Hopeful Arrested in Argentina
Authorities say the suspect entered Argentina illegally and will remain detained as Colombia seeks his extradition in the killing case.
- On Tuesday, authorities in Argentina arrested Brayan Ferney Cruz Castillo, a suspect in the murder of Senator Miguel Uribe, according to the Prosecutor General. Castillo faces extradition for his alleged role in the criminal conspiracy to kill Uribe.
- Senator Miguel Uribe was shot in the head during a campaign event in Bogota in June. The attack was carried out by an organized criminal structure involving multiple actors, according to the investigation conducted in Colombia.
- Prosecutors believe the local network acted for the Second Marquetalia, a paramilitary faction led by Ivan Marquez, a former commander for the Revolutionary Armed Forces. Authorities previously ordered the capture of seven figures in the group in March.
- One 15-year teenager accused of being the shooter was charged with attempted murder and possession of an illegal weapon. He was sentenced to seven years in juvenile detention in August, two months after Uribe died.
- Uribe's death was particularly symbolic as his mother, Diana Turbay, was killed in a 1991 abduction immortalized in News of a Kidnapping by Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Authorities credited the latest arrest to international cooperation.
