Suspect in killing of elderly NYC couple also tried to drain their bank accounts, prosecutors say
Jamel McGriff allegedly killed Frank and Maureen Olton during a home invasion, then set fire to their Queens home to destroy evidence and tried to steal over $10,000, prosecutors said.
- Last month, Jamel McGriff, 42-year-old Bronx resident, was charged with killing Frank Olton, 76, and Maureen Olton, 77, and setting their Queens, New York City home on fire.
- McGriff forced his way into the Oltons' home after speaking with Frank Olton and remained for nearly five hours before prosecutors say he set the house on fire to destroy evidence.
- At the scene, responders discovered that Maureen Olton appears to have been tied to a chair and strangled, her badly burned body found in the living room, while firefighters found Frank Olton tied to a pole in the basement with multiple stab wounds.
- He was caught the following day after going to a movie in Times Square, pleaded not guilty Tuesday, and was ordered held until Nov. 12 while on parole after serving 16 years.
- Following the killings, he allegedly attempted to transfer more than $10,000 from the couple’s accounts and spent nearly $800 on clothes at a Macy’s, prosecutors say.
