Suspect arrested and charged in Lutsen Resort Lodge arson
Authorities arrested a suspect nearly two years after the arson destroyed Minnesota's oldest resort, amid investigations revealing financial troubles and code violations.
- The BCA and State Fire Marshal said they arrested Bryce James Campbell, 41, in Michigan and charged him with arson and insurance fraud nearly two years after the Feb. 6, 2024 blaze.
- The blaze on Feb. 6, 2024 began after night auditor and lodge staff reported smoke beneath the lobby floor and called 911 around 12:30 a.m., destroying the wood main building and leaving only chimneys standing.
- Evidence in the criminal complaint shows samples tested had Swissmar fire gel on a water heater, surveillance footage and phone records placed Campbell near the resort, and colleague and husband messages joked about burning and questioned his whereabouts.
