- On Monday, the Supreme Court relaxed bail conditions for former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, removing his twice-weekly ED appearance in Chennai in the money-laundering cash-for-jobs case.
- Last year the court had imposed the bail conditions when it granted Balaji bail, and Balaji approached the court in October, leading the court to agree to examine his plea on November 14.
- Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal told the bench the probe was complete and the chargesheet filed, noting Balaji had complied with 116 appearances over 13 months while the ED opposed relaxation citing crime seriousness.
- The bench directed that former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji appear before the Deputy Director, Enforcement Directorate at Chennai only as required, with the ED serving advance notice, while trial judges consider exemption pleas on merits.
- The bench observed, `Why is this man required to appear before the Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate at Chennai on every Monday and Friday? &at least save your own officer from the harassment as he will have to wait twice per week for this gentleman to come`, with ED counsel Zoheb Hussain warning of witness influence concern.
