SC Notice to Centre, EC on Plea Challenging SIR in Maharashtra
The court said deleted voters can re-register without prosecution as it agreed to hear a challenge to Maharashtra’s roll deletions on Nov. 5.
- On Monday, the Supreme Court orally assured Maharashtra voters deleted during the Special Intensive Revision that they will not face prosecution for filing Form 6 to re-register as electors.
- The Bench heard that thousands of voters in Mumbai and Pune were marked absent and subsequently deleted from electoral rolls because of ongoing home redevelopment projects in both cities.
- Senior advocate Arvind Datar reported 20,688,487 electors were excluded, citing 3,500 redevelopment projects in Mumbai and 1,500 in Pune as sources of 'person not found' and 'logical discrepancies' errors.
- The Supreme Court agreed to urgently hear the plea challenging the Maharashtra SIR on November 5, as Datar argued that forcing deleted voters to file as fresh voters could trigger prosecution.
- Notices were issued to the Election Commission of India and the Centre regarding the mass exclusion, which affected over 21 percent of the state's nearly 97.9 million registered voters during the revision.
