El Niño doesn't create new heat on the planet. It releases heat that the ocean has already stored beneath the surface, which is why a strong El Niño often results in one of the warmest years on record, as was the case in 2024.

For the first time, more than 30 degrees were measured in the Niño 3.4 region in the Pacific. Experts speak of a Super El Niño with possible consequences for the global climate.
