SUMI-E SUMI-E is an ancient Japanese monochrome painting. The word SUMI-E is a combination of two Japanese words: SUMI means “ink”, E means “painting”. HISTORY SUMI-E has a thousand-year history and its roots are in China during the SUNG dynasty, i.e. between 680-960, when the foundations of monochrome Chinese painting were laid.
