Study of Nearly 27,000 Men Is The Largest Yet on Tight Underwear And Sperm Quality
Researchers found tight underwear was linked to lower semen volume and more sperm DNA damage in nearly 27,000 men seeking fertility tests.
- Urologist Xue-Chun Hu from the University of Science and Technology of China led a study of 26,836 men revealing that tight underwear is linked to poorer sperm quality. The research was published today in the Asian Journal of Andrology.
- Tight Y-front briefs reduce breathability, which can increase scrotal temperature by up to 1°C compared to looser underwear. Scientists hypothesize this modest temperature rise disrupts sperm development, contributing to "impaired spermatogenesis."
- Data showed tight underwear was linked to 108 percent higher odds of sperm DNA fragmentation, 48 percent higher odds of abnormally shaped sperm, and 12 percent higher odds of reduced sperm motility. Researchers also found higher prevalence of erectile dysfunction among the tight underwear group.
- However, biomedical scientist Tim Moss of HealthyMale cautioned that the study enrolled only men seeking fertility evaluations, limiting generalizability to the broader population. The research cannot prove tight underwear directly causes reduced sperm quality or that loose-fitting alternatives improve conception.
- Choosing loose-fitting underwear may represent a simple, modifiable lifestyle factor to protect sperm health. However, while sperm counts are declining globally, experts note environmental pollutants likely play a larger role in fertility decline than underwear type.
