Violent Crime in DC Declines, but when It Happens It’s Deadlier

UNITED STATES, JUL 24 – Homicides dropped by 16% in 2024 with 631 fewer cases in 29 cities despite 56% of Americans perceiving crime as rising, revealing a gap between data and public opinion.

A new midyear report from the Council on Criminal Justice reveals that violent crime is declining across major U.S. cities. However, D.C. stands out for a troubling trend: While overall violent incidents are down, they are significantly more deadly.
